fine dine

this morning at work i met an american couple who now live in mobile, alabama, but used to live in wilmington, deleware working for dupont, have a sister living in charlottesville, and are heading next week to virginia beach to play golf. weeiirrrd.
after they left i joked to my coworkers that they were never going to get tips anymore after i go (this couple left two pounds to honor our small world/bond). not sure how i of all the employees ended up in the consistent role of the charmer, but everyone else just sort of lets me go off and do my thing with the customers and sticks to putting dishes away and resetting tables. hopefully this will persist after i've repatriated - i'm not sure that the novelty won't be worn off in little old charlottesville. hell, assuming i even find a job there! i think it'll be okay actually.

another story from work actually, this one a bit stranger: one of the only coworkers that isn't polish is a 4oish-yr-old english man named tim. he looks very youthful for his age and has a beautiful wife who is an ex-model and a 13-year-old son that he adores. he only works a few breakfast shifts a week and spends the rest of his time as quite a successful artist (he says he keeps the restaurant job to get him up in the mornings) - doing painting and interior design, namely. he is very cultured and keeps classy company and spends much energy on enjoying life, having parties, visiting his friend the baroness's estate for the weekend, doing a little cocaine now and then (such is the way in britain, sadly), playing video games with his son. and on and on...he is always talking up a storm and has a daring sense of humour, which i appreciate. mostly he is kind of this cartoon character who is very amusing to have around, because he is just always going off on some story or joke or talking with me about cultural things, restaurants or galleries i should go to. i swear we do work sometimes too, by the way. anyway so recently i was talking to him about going to the beltane festival last sunday, asking him what it would be like and saying that i would be going over after my shift ended to meet some friends. he wasn't aware of its exact date this year (though its the same every year, but whatever) and so asked me about it and seemed like he might think of going. keep in mind, this event is attended by 10,000 people, all wandering all over this massive hill looking at the various processions and dances happening in different spots.
so i learned today from my boss cameron that tim thought i was asking him to go with me, like on a date or as an expression of romantic interest...! weird. or at least that's what he was boasting of, anyway, however sincere. cameron assured him that he was probably mistaken, did he know that i have a boyfriend? and that he is married? glad to keep him thinking he's still got it and all, but what an odd thing to go on blathering about to our coworkers. funny, because usually my workplace is so free from these kinds of silly dynamics and dramas.

i only have one week left of working there, after i return from paris. i am going to miss it a good bit i think, i am quite fond of the place and the people. but, i shan't elaborate, for i have too much sentiment building right now about all things edinburgh. life is stressful. and i should really start writing this paper due monday. i'm feeling a little zen about all of my work right now (paper monday, exam wednesday), but hopefully that won't last - good to get a little fire in my coals to get things moving along. wish me luck-
